Opportunity Information: Apply for W81XWH 21 KCRP PCFA
The DoD Kidney Cancer Research Program (KCRP) Postdoctoral and Clinical Fellowship Award (FY21; W81XWH-21-KCRP-PCFA) is designed to support recent PhD and/or medical school graduates who are in postdoctoral training and/or clinical fellowship and want to build a long-term career focused on kidney cancer. The main goal is twofold: fund innovative, high-impact kidney cancer research and, at the same time, help the fellow gain the skills, publications, and career development support needed to become an independent investigator and future leader in the field. A strong application is expected to make a clear case that the work could meaningfully advance kidney cancer research and/or patient care rather than adding only a small incremental step.
A central expectation is impact. Proposed projects must aim for outcomes that could accelerate progress toward ending kidney cancer, either in the near term or over a longer horizon, but in a way that is still clearly significant. Applicants are expected to identify who ultimately benefits from the work, such as specific kidney cancer patient groups or individuals at increased risk. The research itself can range from bold, high-risk/high-reward ideas that are still early in development to more mature projects backed by preliminary data, as long as the science has a plausible path to major advancement and, where relevant, eventual clinical translation.
The research strategy needs to be well reasoned and rigorous. Applications should lay out a sound rationale and logical approach and include preliminary data when available. Reviewers will look for evidence of strong experimental design, clear methods and sufficient detail, appropriate controls, a thoughtful statistical plan, and an honest discussion of potential pitfalls with workable alternative approaches. Research involving human subjects and human anatomical substances is allowed, but clinical trials are explicitly not permitted under this announcement.
Unlike many mechanisms where a senior faculty member is the official project lead, the postdoctoral or clinical fellow is the Principal Investigator (PI) for this award. That means the fellow is expected to take primary responsibility for writing key components such as the project narrative and the researcher development plan, with guidance from the mentor. Prior kidney cancer experience is not strictly required for the PI, but both the proposed project and the training/career plan must be kidney cancer-focused. Applications should also highlight the PI's trajectory and likelihood of becoming an independent kidney cancer researcher, supported by accomplishments such as first-author papers, prior funding if applicable, honors, and strong recommendation letters.
Mentorship is treated as a core feature of the award. The mentor (or co-mentor) must have appropriate expertise in kidney cancer research and/or patient care, demonstrated through recent publications and active funding, and must show a clear commitment to developing the PI. If the primary mentor does not have established kidney cancer expertise, the application must include a formal co-mentor who is an experienced kidney cancer investigator. The program also recognizes that some excellent scientists may have less extensive mentoring track records; in those cases, a particularly strong and well-structured researcher development plan can help offset that concern.
The researcher development plan is not a minor add-on; it is a major review element. Applicants must describe the training environment and provide an individualized, kidney cancer-centered development roadmap that explains how the fellowship period will build the PI's scientific independence. Multidisciplinary approaches are encouraged (though not required), and if the project spans multiple fields, the application should clearly define how those disciplines integrate and how the team and environment support the fellow's growth.
From a mission perspective, the proposed research must be relevant to active-duty Service Members, Veterans, military beneficiaries, and/or the broader American public. The opportunity also encourages alignment with the congressionally mandated Metastatic Cancer Task Force recommendations, particularly ideas that could speed clinical and translational progress for advanced or recurrent disease, as long as the proposed work fits within the program limits. Collaborations between military or VA institutions and non-military institutions are strongly encouraged to leverage complementary expertise, infrastructure, and access to unique patient populations.
Funding is provided through assistance agreements, meaning awards are issued as either grants or cooperative agreements depending on how much involvement the Department of Defense anticipates during the project. If substantial involvement by the agency is expected (for example, collaboration or participation in the research), the mechanism may be a cooperative agreement; otherwise, it may be a standard grant. For FY21, the anticipated maximum direct costs for the full period of performance were capped at $195,000. The program expected to allocate about $1.87 million total to fund roughly six awards, with final funding dependent on federal fund availability and the outcomes of scientific and programmatic review. Key timeline details included an original application closing date of July 13, 2021, and an intention to make awards no later than September 30, 2022, with FY21 funds expected to remain available for obligation within the federal use window that extends to September 30, 2027. Eligible applicants were broadly unrestricted by organization type, subject to any specific eligibility clarifications stated in the full announcement, and the administering agency was the Department of Defense (Department of the Army, USAMRAA), under CFDA 12.420.Apply for W81XWH 21 KCRP PCFA
